BLUESTONE

WHAT IS BLUESTONE

“Bluestone” is a term that refers to sedimentary rocks, like sandstone or limestone that appear blue-grey in colour. Bluestone in Australia is a basalt or olivine basal. When wet or freshly cut, bluestone usually appears blue, however, it’s also available in many other colours.

The grain size and colours vary from coarse sand to coarse silt with various shades of colours of blue, grey, brown, red, pink and green.

Although it’s not as hard as granite, it’s a fairly durable stone that is quite resistant to cracking. In addition, it can be processed into slabs which are very attractive features as a building material.

Bluestone is ideal for many building applications such as flooring, pool copings, wall veneers, countertops, tables, fireplaces and architectural facings.

Bluestone consists of small particles of silica cemented together by silica combined with a slight amount of argillaceous material.

It is also typically consisting of feldspars, quartz, muscovite, chlorite and pyrite.
